As you will know from our previous post
Would you pickup a hitch-hiker?, Mr C and I like helping other people, particularly of the older generation.
Last Saturday as I was on my way to do some shopping in fashionable High Street Kensington in London, I met this sweet old lady, walking slowly on the pavement, pulling her shopping trolley behind. So I naturally stopped to help her cross the road, as she was quite slow, and in central London there is a lot of traffic, taxis in a rush to get to their destination, and fast sportscars driven by wealthy foreign residents.
So we started chatting, and our conversation went something like this:
Me “are you going shopping?“
Old Lady “
Yes, my doctor says I should go out every day, especially if it's sunny, to get my dose of vitamin D, he says it's good for me“
Me. “do you need any help with the shopping? I can come with you if you want, I have time“
Old L. “
no thank you, it's OK, I am used to it. But today I have no cash, so I have to stop at the cash-machine at the bank, to get some money and do my shopping“.
Me “don’t you have anybody helping you? at home or with the shopping?“
Old L. “
No, I live alone. I am used to it, I am very independent.“.
You won't believe how old I am.
Me “No, I would never ask a lady for her age“
Old L. “
In 2 months time I will be 100“
I was shocked and immediately phoned Mr C to relay the story.
100 years old, going out pulling her trolley to do her shopping, and using modern technology like automatic cash-machine with PIN number. How can you be more independent than that!!
What do you think?
Vitamin D seems pretty good for a long life.
